Bill O’Reilly was born on September 10, 1949, to parents William James Sr. and Winifred Angela (Drake) O’Reilly, who were from Teaneck, New Jersey, and Brooklyn, respectively. The birth took place at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. He has an English (Colonial American) background but is primarily of Irish descent. His mother’s family is from Northern Ireland, and some of his father’s relatives had lived in County Cavan, Ireland, since the early eighteenth century. When their baby was born, the O’Reilly family was residing in a compact apartment in Fort Lee, New Jersey. His family relocated to Long Island’s Levittown in 1951. Janet is O’Reilly’s sister.

Beginning in the late 1970s and early 1980s, O’Reilly reported for local American television stations before moving on to work for CBS News and ABC News. From 1989 to 1995, he served as the host of the tabloid-themed television show Inside Edition. From 1996 until 2017, O’Reilly presented The O’Reilly Factor on the Fox News Channel. At the time of his firing, Howard Kurtz, a media analyst, referred to Bill O’Reilly as “the biggest star in the 20-year history of Fox News,” and The O’Reilly Factor had been the highest-rated cable news program for 16 years. He has written a number of books and served as host of The Radio Factor (2002–2009).

The network fired O’Reilly after The New York Times revealed at the beginning of 2017 that he and Fox News had paid five women almost $13 million to resolve many sexual misconduct complaints. O’Reilly was terminated by the United Talent Agency and literary agency WME as a result of a second New York Times investigation that said he paid legal analyst Lis Wiehl $32 million for allegedly starting a “nonconsensual sexual relationship” with her. He then started presenting a podcast called No Spin News.
