Marvel has been lowkey table setting the next Avengers franchise for the better part of a year now—long before Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) made her MCU debut in Hawkeye. In Marvel’s first television series, WandaVision, we met Wanda’s twins, Billy and Tommy Maximoff, Wiccan and Speed, two heroes who later belong to the group called the “Young Avengers.” In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, we meet another Young Avenger, Eli Bradley (Elijah Richardson), who becomes Patriot. We also meet a young Joaquín Torres (Danny Ramirez), who will become the new Falcon, a character, we are sure, who will also join the team of millennial actors.
While none of these characters are featured prominently, their introduction into the MCU sets up a future ensemble project. Alongside Patriot, Kate Bishop is one of the first heroes introduced in the Young Avengers Volume 1 comic, which makes her prominence in Hawkeye something of a pulse check for Marvel; if Steinfeld can bring in the money, chances are she’ll help lead the next big Marvel team-up.
Of course, all of this is likely years in the making; four years separated the first Iron Man from The Avengers. Maybe by 2026 we’ll see something like the first millennial (or Gen Z?) Avengers.
Until then, we should become familiar with many of the comic characters those films will likely feature, including Kate Bishop—who at one point, fights against Deadpool. Hopefully we’re in for a crazy Marvel future.
Who is Kate Bishop?
MarvelIn the comic history, Bishop grew up in Manhattan. When she was young, she was held hostage by the villain El Matador before being rescued by the Avengers and, in particular, Hawkeye (Clint Barton). Barton became a role model for Bishop who appreciated that he was an Avenger even though he didn’t have powers.
Like Bruce Wayne, Bishop grew up rich, but wanted to serve her city. And like Wayne a crime inspired her heroic pursuits. Bishop was sexually assaulted in central park. Afterward, she trained in swordplay, archery, and martial arts as a form of therapy.
