John Royce Mathis was born on September 30, 1935 in Gilmer, Texas. He was the middle child of seven children born to Clem Mathis and Mildred Boyd. Although born in Texas, Mathis was raised in San Francisco after his family moved to that area. Johnny Mathis’ talent for singing was discovered by his father, who took steps to encourage his son’s talent. He not only bought him a piano, but also gave him lessons from a classical singing teacher. Teacher Connie Cox taught Mathis everything from the vocal scale to opera singing.
Mathis continued to hone his talent by performing for audiences at home, school and church events. In addition to his musical talent, Johnny Mathis was also a gifted athlete. He attended George Washington High School, where he excelled in the high jump so much that he not only received an athletic scholarship to San Francisco State College, but was also tried out for the US Olympic team. While studying, Johnny Mathis continuedperformances in various local jazz clubs. In September 1955, his apparent talent caught the attention of a club owner, Helen Noga. She became his manager and secured him an audition with a Columbia Records executive. The audition was a success and Columbia Records immediately signed him. Mathis went to work and released his debut album, Johnny Mathis: A New Sound in Popular Song, in 1956 . He followed it up with a string of hits, Chances Are and It’s Not My Job to Say, in 1957.
During his career, the singer has released 73 studio albums, 18 of which have gone gold and six went platinum. He reached 50 hits on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Chart, and his 1958 album Johnny’s Greatest Hits spent nearly a decade on Billboard’s chart. The album spent an unprecedented 490 consecutive weeks (from 1958 to 1967) on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart.
