After making his Dinamo debut in 2005, Luka Modric went on to win three consecutive league titles as well as domestic cups. He received the Prva HNL Player of the Year award in 2007. He signed with Tottenham Hotspur, a Premier League side, in 2008 for a club-record transfer cost of £16.5 million.

Radojka and Stipe Modri, Luka’s parents, were living in Zadar when Luka was born.

Luka was five years old and lived in the stone house of his grandpa, shepherding goats. In 1991, during the Croatian War of Independence, his life was profoundly changed.

Then, a fire ravaged his family’s house, but thankfully, Modri’s family had already fled.

While his Father entered in the Croatian army as an aeromechanic, Luka’s family lived in hotels as refugees for the next several years. Luka played football for the first time in Zadar when tens of thousands of bombs dropped all around him every day. The little youngster used football as a means of escape.

Dinamo Zagreb recruited him when he was 16 years old after seeing his talent with the youth group of his local team NK Zadar. Before coming on loan to Inter Zapres and Zrinjski Mostar, he continued to develop in Zagreb.
